12: Team Dynamics + Venture Lab #2

Date:
Friday, October 30, 2015
Summary
In this session, we will start with a short lecture about the importance of people in new enterprises. We will then work through a process to improve the functioning of your own E145 team. We will learn about group dynamics and how to improve the functioning of teams and groups that you find yourself in, both during your educational experience and in your career.

As a reminder, the Venture Lab component of this session is a required, in-class meeting of your OAP team. You will use this time to work together on your project and ask questions of the teaching team.

Quote of the Day: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Term Project: (Policy on Term Project Assignments)

Please prepare your team's second Positioning Statement (PS2) by today and post to your team's website. Depending on what you've learned in the past week or two, your PS1 may have been validated or changed. To explain why your PS2 looks as it does today, please prepare a report of your research (both primary and secondary). If and only if time allows during this session, your team can volunteer to share your new statement and any other comments with the entire class as long it all fits within 2-3 minutes (which simulates the length of an elevator ride, of course).
  • What have you done?
  • Who have you spoken to? (i.e., a list of contacts)
  • What did you learn?
Team Effectiveness Exercise
During this session, we will do a "with respect to my team, I like ... and I wish ..." exercise to measure and improve your team's performance. Please review The Characteristics of Effective Teams and The Characteristics of Ineffective Teams by noted author, Jim Collins, for some ideas on how great teams operate and give some thought to this before coming to class. In your own opinion, which of the 11 items on the sheet is your team doing well and therefore have a rating of 4 or 5 (in other words, the "I like" items)? Which of the 11 items on the sheet could the team do better at and therefore have a rating of 1 or 2 (in other words, the "I wish" items)?
