Session 11: Team Dynamics + Venture Lab #2

Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Summary: In this mandatory session for all students so we have entire teams in attendance, we will start with a short lecture about the importance of people in new enterprises. We will then work through a process to improve the functioning of your own E145 team. We will learn about group dynamics and how to improve the functioning of teams and groups that you find yourself in, both during your educational experience and in your career.

As a reminder, the Venture Lab component of this session is a required, in-class meeting of your OAP team. You will use this time to work together on your project's next milestone and ask any questions of the teaching team.

Quote of the Day: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Term Project: (Policy on Term Project Assignments)

PS2: Post an update of your PS1 to Canvas ideally by noon today but no later than noon of the day following this session (Wednesday). This should result from feedback and research you have received from sharing it with others such as classmates, friends, customers, users, partners, and others. Succinctly explain why you have changed the statement.

Team Effectiveness Exercise
During this session, we will do a "with respect to my team, I like ... and I wish ..." exercise to measure and improve your team's performance. Please read The Characteristics of Effective Teams and The Characteristics of Ineffective Teams by noted author, Jim Collins, for 11 good/bad metrics to measure how teams operate. Please give some thought to this before coming to class.

Consider a scale of 1-5 for each of the 11 corresponding metrics from bad to good. In your own opinion, which 2 of the 11 items on the sheet is your team doing well and therefore would have a rating of 4 or 5 (in other words, the "I like" items)? Which 2 of the 11 items on the sheet could the team do better at and therefore have a rating of 1 or 2 (in other words, the "I wish" items)?
